Video has to be encoded, packaged into segments, distributed to an edge server and buffered by your player before a single frame appears. Each of those steps costs time, and they are sequential.

That is why a neighbour on terrestrial television celebrates a goal you have not seen. There is no setting that removes it, because it is the delivery model rather than a fault.

The buffer is a real trade

A short buffer means less delay and less protection. A long one means you are further behind and ride straight over a network hiccup that would otherwise stop the picture.

During a cup final, most people given the choice plainly would rather be twenty seconds behind and uninterrupted. Your player exposes this setting, and it is worth deciding rather than accepting the default.

Kick-off is a load test

Demand is not evenly spread. Everyone in a country wants the same match at the same second, and that is when a service is genuinely tested. Your own network has the same shape, because the neighbours are all streaming too.

If you are going to run one cable in the house, run it to the screen you watch sport on. And open the channel ten minutes early — a stream that has settled is more stable than one started at kick-off.
